When we first moved into this house (4 years ago), we couldn’t afford dressers for our kids. I just wasn’t sure how or where everything would end up; and we were already spending a ton of money on decidedly not-fun things like sewers and roofs.
What I did have were these plastic bins. They actually traveled with me from college to apartment to married life. I used to keep my textbooks and coffee grounds in these, stacked in my dorm with a view of State Street Chicago.
So I threw three bins in my daughter’s closet.
One bin for pajamas and underwear.
One bin for tops.
One bin for bottoms.
And the system stuck.
It worked so well that when my son joined rooms (and closets), I bought him his own three bins.
And then I bought three more for my baby’s closet when she was born.
The kids can easily see everything they have at once. They can VERY easily put away their own laundry. They even sort their own laundry out of each load!
In case it’s not clear—I have never folded kids laundry and I have never regretted it.
I know we all have our own situations. We all have unique limits and needs. I hope this sparks and idea and example for you how often less really is more.
(Shout out to my bud Mieke for this post idea!)
