Changing seasons is a human experience. And spending money is so emotional. It’s no wonder stores have caught onto seasonal spending in their marketing. Since we no longer hunt and gather, it makes sense that we’ve just started to shop and collect.
Instead of letting capitalism and scarcity define our emotional spending … here are some ways you can get excited for the next season without shopping or adding anything new:
Open the windows just two inches in every room, and let some air flow.
Rearrange your furniture without buying anything new.
Dump all of your socks on the floor and donate any you haven’t used this winter.
Sanitize stair rails and light switches.
Wash any and all throw blankets and accent pillows/cases.
Browse the library web site and put on hold every gardening book you fancy.
(I am excited for spring, but because I live in Michigan, I expect at least one more blizzard this year. And it’s very likely my kids could go up another size in another month. Soon enough I’ll go through all their clothes and enjoy the privilege of providing them new duds. Until then, I am daydreaming and nesting in way that don’t involve shopping.)
Yes, this! I am catching in myself the feeling that spending money and buying things = productivity. I love the idea of going through my sock drawer instead of thinking about Hugo's Easter basket... which he will not remember for at least two more years.
