Two days until June and I am finally confident in moving winter coats into deep storage.
Wherever you enter your home—foyer, garage door, makeshift mud room in an apartment— having the hooks reflect the season is important. It makes your spaces easier to clean and more conducive to your lifestyle.
This week, I pared everything down to one zipped hoodie and one rain coat per body in the house. I donated a few winter coats that we won’t need again and I actually moved snow boots to the basement. I even checked to see if mittens might be on sale and I scored a couple for half off and put them directly in storage.
Yes, it truly takes until nearly June in Michigan before this can happen.
If you have five minutes to clear some space today, your morning routine will thank you.
Take everything off the hooks or coat hangers
Decide what can stay, what can go, and what can be stored. Check coat and boot sizes. With kids you have to decide if you want something to become a hand-me-down and keep it, or find it another home.
Wash anything before you donate it or store it.
Leave only what you will need for the warmest season. I like the definition that minimalism isn’t living with less than what you need, but just exactly as much as you need. I, for one, will be so glad not to trip over winter boots anymore, or loose my summer jacket under layers of hanging snow pants.
Enjoy the empty space and visual margin you made.
Nurture an abundance mentality by keeping only what you need, being grateful for it, and freely letting go of what you don’t need.
